Water Quality: Management, Sanitation and Investigation

Protection and Sanitation of Watersheds

Entry of sewage water/effluent

Influence

Communal waste water enables especially phosphor and nitrogen compounds, various organic substances detergents and morbidic agents to be introduced into the waters. The entry of nutrients, especially phosphor, leads to the eutrophication.

Refurbishment/Control

The introduction of sewage, also treated water, generally cannot be tolerated in water conservation areas (Graphic: Problems). Industry and townships therefore have to be connected to sewage plants and their discharge has to be drained away from the catchment area of the lake or water reservoir.

This is, for example, why all larger towns area connected to a sewage line in the catchment area of the Leibis-Lichte reservoir under construction in the Thuringia Slate Area: a sewage pressure line travels round the reservoirs and discharges into a sewage plant outside the catchment area. This sewage line is provided with multiple leakage control.

However in some cases, the connection of individual farms or forestry buildings to the sewage mains can result in high expenditure that bears no relation to water conservation benefits. Individual solutions have to be found in such cases, especially well-sealed sewage pits, for example, which have to be regularly emptied.
